Most siblings argue and have their little fights now and then. It seems to be part of their nature. Teasing, play-fighting, and even some light wrestling are pretty typical in sibling dynamics, and that’s true for our pets too.
Take Pearl, the Golden Retriever. She had to teach her puppy sister, Poppi, a thing or two about boundaries.
In a TikTok shared by @pearlgoldengirl, Pearl was just relaxing on the floor, trying to enjoy some calm time. But Poppi had a different agenda; she wanted to play. So, she started tugging on her big sister’s tail—pulling and pulling without a care.
“Pearl, are you okay?” their mom asked, noticing what was going on.
Pearl stayed patient, clearly trying to signal to Poppi that she wasn’t in the mood for a game. But Poppi didn’t catch on and kept tugging on that tail like it was some sort of toy.
Eventually, Pearl had enough. She jumped up, and their mom called out, “Okay, that’s enough!” Pearl gave Poppi a few low growls and nips—just enough to get the point across. Finally, the playful little pup understood and backed off.
Their mom complimented Pearl for addressing the situation with a mix of firmness and gentleness.
Puppies Learn From Older Dogs
At first, some viewers might have wondered why their mom didn’t intervene sooner. She viewed the moment as a chance for Pearl to teach Poppi something valuable.
“Do you realize how crucial it is for an adult dog to correct a puppy in a proper way?” the caption explained. “That’s why I didn’t step in. Adult dogs show puppies where the boundaries are. A brief growl or a change in stance isn’t being aggressive; it’s just communication. It’s essential for puppies to learn manners, respect for space, and build the social skills they need for life.”
Mom viewed this incident as a win for Pearl, as it helped her practice being assertive in a constructive way.
“This teaches Pearl to stand her ground, not allow unwanted behaviors,” the story pointed out. “The correction is calm, brief, and effectively halts the behavior; this is how puppies learn limits and gain confidence.”
Poppi will likely think twice before trying that game again.
