Goldendoodle’s Dramatic Coat Change Surprises Owners
It’s a common sight: as dogs age, their fur often shifts, sometimes incorporating more gray, similar to how our hair does. But have you ever seen a dog’s coat change colors so drastically in just a few months? One goldendoodle owner on Instagram, for instance, captures this astonishing transformation of their pet, and it’s quite the surprise!
Set to the tune of “Bittersweet Symphony,” the video first features a 6-month-old goldendoodle named Knox, who appears with adorable teddy bear-like dark brown and bright white fur. The next snapshot shows him with a more subdued light brown and cream coat. The post features a caption saying, “I hope his coat doesn’t fade when he gets older,” and in the comments, the owner adds, “I swear it’s the same dog 😂.”
The comments section is buzzing with discussion. People are chattering about the ethics of breeding goldendoodles, which are a mix of golden retriever and poodle. Many share similar stories about their dogs’ coat transformations, even for skeptics. One user chimes in, noting that “the progressive fading is a poodle genetic trait,” something that purebred poodles also experience. Regardless, Knox’s owner admits, “I know I’m biased but I still think Knox looks cute ♥️,” and it’s hard to disagree!
Major Changes as Puppies Grow into Adults
While coat color changes can happen as puppies mature, like with Knox, there are other significant changes during this growth phase. Typically, within the first two years, a dog’s behavior transitions from erratic and high-energy to a more stable disposition, along with the end of teething and improved bladder control.
As dogs grow, they continue to require daily exercise and mental engagement, but their energy levels tend to even out, making their behavior more predictable. They often develop the ability to focus better and can entertain themselves more easily, which, luckily, makes training a bit simpler. Their baby teeth will eventually fall out, replaced by adult teeth, bringing an end to the nonstop chewing—thank goodness! Simultaneously, their bladders expand, allowing for longer periods between bathroom breaks. Additionally, young pups will shed their initial coat, which is often replaced by thicker, coarser fur suited to their breed.
No matter where your dog is in the aging process—puppies, young adults, or seniors—there’s always something special and joyful to appreciate about them, and there’s a continuous opportunity to learn more about their development!
