Golf Talk Today: Can Scottie Scheffler win staggering 6th victory at Travelers Championship

Welcome to Playing Through’s new morning ritual: Golf Talk Today.

Each morning on “Golf Talk Today,” our staff discusses various aspects of the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and other professional golf tournaments.

The final round of the Travelers Championship is upon us, and it’s no surprise to anyone that Scottie Scheffler is in contention to win. Scheffler’s good friend, Tom Kim, continues to hold onto the lead by one stroke. But can he hold off the two-time Masters champion?

Things will be different on Sunday: The PGA Tour moved up the final-round tee times and split players into groups of three, with the top players teeing off at 11:15 a.m. ET due to inclement weather forecast for the afternoon.

Kim, Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia are in the final group of the day. Let’s discuss Championship Sunday.

The final round of the Travelers Championship is going to be a fierce battle.

Cameron Young shot a historic 59 on Saturday, but his play was quickly overshadowed by that of Scheffler, Kim and Bhatia.

He was tied with Kim at 13 under but was five strokes behind at the end of Saturday’s round.

The afternoon waves were once again plagued by weather delays, but conditions were so good that it didn’t matter.

While Kim had a strong first three days, so did Scheffler and Bhatia, all of whom shot 65 or better in their first three rounds.

The winner on Sunday will be the player who minimizes mistakes and scores the most birdies.

Scheffler already has five wins in 2024. He has won three signature events, most recently at The Memorial, the 2024 Masters and The Players.

Can he win his fourth signature event? Scheffler is very hard to beat at the moment, so it will be interesting to see if a couple of young guys like Kim and Bhatia can keep up with him.

Needless to say, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Sungjae Lim and Tony Finau are lurking in the top group.

Scheffler had a rough start at the U.S. Open but was back on track on Thursday. Either way, Championship Sunday will be a close contest for the Travelers with records potentially being broken.
