Golf Talk Today: Jason Day’s latest Malbon Golf outfits will steal all the attention at U.S. Open

Welcome to Playing Through’s new morning ritual: Golf Talk Today.

Each morning on “Golf Talk Today,” our staff discusses various elements of the PGA Tour, LPGA, LIV Golf and more.

In this, our fifth installment, we’ll be talking more about the U.S. Open preparations, but also about golf fashion and the exciting partnership between Jason Day and Malbon Golf At major championships, it’s common for brands to go all out in terms of fashion and equipment.

So grab some coffee, grab some breakfast and let’s settle down to discuss the top news in professional golf.

Jason Day’s 2024 US Open outfit script

Since Day left Nike for Malbon Golf earlier this year, his clothing choices have been one of the biggest talking points. From the vest he wore at the Masters to what pants he wears each week, golf insiders love to talk about it.

Leading up to the U.S. Open, Malbon is outfitting him in the brand’s soon-to-be-released new clothing.

Fans have already started calling out the brand for Friday’s jacket — it’s certainly a unique choice, as it’s the middle of summer and why Day would need to wear a heavy-looking coat — but that’s the point.

Ever since The Sentry, fans have given Malbon Golf a ton of free publicity simply by hating Day’s outfit, and for every person who hates it, there are people who love it.

Malbon seems to have nailed it again, given the audacity of the script. Just bringing Day into the story will likely be one of the biggest storylines of the week. It’s a genuine genius move.

Best quotes from the US Open Tuesday

“I’m not thinking about winning anymore. I’m just focusing on this week and getting ready to play. Just because I won last week doesn’t mean I can play other guys this week. Everybody starts at par and we’re all tied again starting Thursday. What happened last week doesn’t matter,” said Scottie Scheffler.

“It’s fun for my son to see what the players are doing on TV, YouTube and TikTok. He’s at home with JTT and Rick a lot, but you never really get the full experience of watching other players hit a golf ball until you see it in person,” Tiger Woods said of his son’s YouTube golfing spree.
