Golf Talk Today: The full Solheim Cup rosters for Team USA and European Team

Welcome to Playing Through's daily ritual, Golf Talk Today.

Each day, the crew will discuss a different element of the PGA Tour, LPGA, LIV Golf and more.

Today we are introducing the full roster of Team USA and Team Europe for the 2024 Solheim Cup. The teams will compete at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia from September 13-15.

Team USA captain Stacy Lewis and Team Europe captain Suzann Pettersen selected the captains, with Lewis able to choose three and Pettersen able to choose four.

Now that the teams are complete, let's take a look at each one.

Team USA Solheim Cup Members

* Q: Qualifiers / CP: Captain's choice

— Nelly Korda (Q)
— Lilia Vu (Q)
— Lauren Coughlin (Q)
— Allie Ewing (Q)
— Arisen Corpus (Q)
— Megan Kang (Q)
— Andrea Lee (Q)
— Allison Lee (Q)
— Rose Chan (Q)
— Lexi Thompson (CP)
— Jennifer Kupcho (CP)
— Sarah Schmeltzel (CP)

Lewis' choice of Lexi Thompson is understandable, as this will likely be her last Cup appearance. She is also one of the most experienced and powerful Cup players on the women's team.

Kupcho is also a veteran, but he only had four top-10 finishes in 2024. Lewis feels he is a perfect fit for this course, and his choice to go this route is understandable.

Her choice of Sarah Schmelzel is also interesting. Sure, she has six top 10 finishes in 2024, but is that enough to trust her in this highly competitive situation?

Her best result during the month was a solo eighth at the ISPS Honda Women's Open, but in her four previous starts she was T-52, T-19, T-44 and MC.

From April to the end of May, there was a period when he was eliminated in the qualifying rounds in five of his six appearances.

Schmelzel might surprise some people, but I'm not sure this would have been my choice.

The U.S. team hasn't won the Solheim Cup since 2017, when it beat Europe, 16.5-11.5, at Des Moines Golf and Country Club in Iowa.

European Team Solheim Cup Roster

* Q: Qualifiers / CP: Captain's choice

— Céline Boutier (Q)
Maya Stark (Q)
— Charlie Hull (Q)
— Leona Maguire (Q)
— Georgia Hall (Q)
— Lynn Grant (Q)
— Carlota Ciganda (Q)
— Anna Nordqvist (Q)
— Madeleine Sagstrom (CP)
— Gemma Dryburgh (CP)
— Emily Christine Pedersen (CP)
— Albane Valenzuela (CP)

Petersen has chosen to add the women who helped him win the Solheim Cup in 2023 to his team, which is a wise move.

After defending the cup in Spain, they are looking to win the Solheim Cup for the fourth time in a row. Despite the score being 14-14, they retained their title as Team Europe won in 2021.

Petersen’s captaincy selection includes Pedersen, who has two top 10 finishes. She has played in the Solheim Cup twice, with a record of five wins, six losses and one draw.

Sagstrom has played for three European teams, and while her record is three wins, five losses and one draw, her experience will be invaluable.

Valenzuela is new to the European team, but a rising star. She has two top-10 finishes in 2024 and four top-25 finishes in the 2024 LET (including the three co-sanctioned events).

Dryburgh was also staying in Spain to stay with the club until 2023.

Petersen made a strategic choice: They may not have won championships individually, but they are all winners and they know what it takes to win.
