Good to officially step down as Freedom Caucus chair by end of week

Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) plans to officially step down as chairman of the House Freedom Caucus by the end of the week, lawmaker and sources told The Hill, bringing to an end his tenure as Virginia's top Republican.

The Freedom Caucus board hopes to name its next chair by Friday, according to sources familiar with the matter. His term was set to expire in December 2025.

News of Good's departure and planned replacement was made public after a group of hardline conservatives held their weekly closed-door meeting on Monday, their first since lawmakers went into recess in August.

The news comes after the Freedom Caucus chairman lost a primary to Republican John Maguire in July and then fell short in an August recount, ending his term in Congress.

Good told The Hill early Monday that he had told his colleagues he was stepping down as chair of the Freedom Caucus after a recount confirmed his loss.

“Once the recount was completed on Aug. 2, I informed the board that I would tender my resignation as chairman once the board had determined what action to take,” Good said.

The chair said he would remain on the Freedom Caucus board and help select a new nominee for the group's chair, which the board would then present to the Freedom Caucus' rank-and-file membership.

Good, who was first elected to Congress in 2020, was named chair of the Freedom Caucus in December, putting him in charge of an influential group of hardline conservatives who are often at odds with the leadership.

Goode was a notable choice: The Virginia Republican was one of eight Republicans who voted to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his position as chief executive and supported Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the Republican presidential primary, then backed former President Trump after DeSantis dropped out.

Virginia Republicans' support for DeSantis contributed to his downfall – the former president had endorsed Maguire in the campaign.
