Google Maps rolls out new features enhanced by Gemini AI.

Google Maps is set to receive significant upgrades utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), as announced by the company on Wednesday.

In a recent blog entry, Google revealed that it is “introducing Google Maps’ first hands-free, conversational driving experience powered by Gemini along with detailed real-world information.”

This latest integration of Gemini AI builds on enhancements already made to various Google products, elevating the capabilities of this leading digital mapping service.

The blog described the experience as akin to “having a knowledgeable friend in the passenger seat, guiding you confidently to your destination.”

What’s new?

Hands-free help with multi-step tasks: The Gemini AI chatbot will support users with complex requests.

For example, a user might ask, “Are there any budget-friendly vegan restaurants along my route within a few miles?” and receive tailored suggestions.

This feature will begin rolling out for both Android and iOS users in the US over the next few weeks.

Navigation using landmarks: Beyond simply measuring distance, Gemini will highlight landmarks for more accurate navigation.

The blog notes that “Gemini achieves this by analyzing extensive information about 250 million locations on Google Maps and comparing it with Street View visuals to select the most relevant landmarks visible from the road.”

Users can expect this feature to arrive soon for Android and iOS in the US.

Integration with other apps: Gemini will connect with various Google applications, like Google Calendar, making it possible to set reminders while navigating using AI.

This capability will also start rolling out to Android and iOS in the US in the upcoming weeks.

Traffic alerts: Users will receive proactive notifications about traffic issues nearby, even when they’re not actively navigating.

This alert system has already begun rolling out in the US, but currently only for Android devices.

Lenses within the map: “Once you arrive, you can depend on Gemini to help you explore,” the blog emphasizes.

By tapping the camera icon in the app, users can obtain information on a variety of restaurants, cafes, shops, and landmarks, supported by Google Lens, which is a visual AI search tool from the company.

This feature is set to gradually roll out in the US for Android and iOS later this month.
