Google reaches agreement on nuclear power for data centers in Alabama and Tennessee

New Nuclear Power Deal for Tech Data Centers

Google, along with Kairos Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), has reached an agreement to supply 50 megawatts of nuclear power for data centers located in Tennessee and Alabama.

This collaboration aims to tackle the growing energy requirements in the U.S. and to enhance the country’s capabilities in next-generation nuclear power generation.

Under the terms of this deal, the Kairos Hermes 2 plant in Oak Ridge will contribute up to 50 megawatts to the TVA grid, which powers Google’s facilities. Interestingly, TVA will be the first utility to purchase power generated from a Gen IV reactor. This marks the inaugural deployment of Hermes 2 as part of a larger agreement between Kairos and Google, which aims for a total supply of 500 megawatts by 2035. Plans are also in place for Kairos to increase the output of Hermes 2 from 28 megawatts to 50 megawatts starting in 2030.

The increasing energy needs driven by U.S. advancements in AI present not only challenges but also opportunities for better energy management.

In October, Google formalized a contract with Kairos, agreeing to acquire power from several small modular reactors still in development. Kairos Power confirmed that the reactor will be strategically located to supply clean energy specifically to Google’s data centers.

Google disclosed this week that the plant will serve data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama.

On another note, Microsoft is set to restart operations at the Pennsylvania Nuclear Power Plant, which previously experienced a partial meltdown in 1979, to support AI operations.

Google stated, “As we move forward, we are striving to create solutions that involve energy consumers, utilities, and tech developers collaborating to advance new technologies aimed at meeting global energy demands reliably and affordably.”

They added that this partnership will help secure clean energy sourced locally for data centers, enabling uninterrupted clean energy delivery every hour of the day.

As the demand for energy-intensive data centers, especially those powered by generative AI, continues to rise, finding reliable electricity sources becomes increasingly crucial.

There’s a clear shift toward employing smaller advanced nuclear reactors to meet electricity demand.

Record energy consumption has pushed the U.S. to new highs, intensifying interest in next-generation nuclear solutions.

The Google-Kairos agreement supports an eventual advanced nuclear capacity of 500 megawatts. This isn’t just about Google; other big players are also in the mix. For example, last year, Microsoft initiated a 20-year agreement that allows for the relaunch of the Unit 1 reactors at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania. Additionally, Amazon has entered into three nuclear-focused agreements with Energy Northwest, X-Energy, and Dominion Energy recently.

Reports from Gridstrategies indicate that U.S. electricity demand is projected to increase by 15.8% by 2029, largely driven by data centers, manufacturing, and broader electrification trends.

The International Energy Agency anticipates that data center energy usage will rise by 130% between 2024 and 2030.
