Google Reduces Its Workforce by Around 200 Employees in Global Business Unit

On Tuesday, Google reduced its workforce by about 200 positions in its global sales and partnerships unit, as reported on Wednesday by sources familiar with the matter.

Major technology companies are readjusting their spending on data centers and AI initiatives while shifting investment toward different areas.

The company informed Reuters that it is implementing minor changes between teams to “enhance collaboration and improve its ability to serve customers quickly and effectively.”

Reports from last month revealed that Google had previously laid off hundreds of employees in various units related to platforms and devices, including Android platforms, Pixel phones, and Chrome browsers.

Earlier this year, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, announced plans to decrease its workforce by 12,000 positions, equating to roughly 6% of its global employee count. As of December 31, 2024, the company had 183,323 employees, according to a submission made in February.

In addition to these job cuts, Facebook’s parent company, Meta, laid off about 5% of its “lowest performers” in January, seeking to rapidly recruit machine learning engineers.

Microsoft also made reductions, cutting 650 jobs within its Xbox division in September. Reports indicated that Amazon terminated staff in several sectors, including telecoms, while Apple eliminated around 100 jobs within its digital services groups last year.
