According to two anonymous sources who attended the meeting, Pichai said these changes were intended to help the company navigate an increasingly competitive environment, especially in the face of growing threats from AI rivals such as OpenAI. He emphasized that it had been introduced. The people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, highlighted the company's internal restructuring efforts.
A Google spokesperson said some roles included in the 10% figure have been transitioned to individual contributor roles, while others have been removed entirely. This strategic move is part of an ongoing efficiency drive that Google has been working on for more than two years.
In September 2022, Pichai publicly stated his goal to increase Google's efficiency by 20 percent. The announcement was followed in January by a historic round of layoffs, eliminating 12,000 positions. The efficiency drive comes at the same time as new AI products from competitors such as OpenAI pose a significant threat to Google's search business.
To address these challenges, Google has aggressively integrated generative AI capabilities into its core business and launched a series of innovative AI products. These include a new AI video generator that outperformed OpenAI's offering in early tests, and a new set of Gemini models, including an “inference” model that demonstrates thought processes.

During the all-hands meeting, Pichai also touched on the concept of “Googleness,” a term often used to describe the company's unique culture and values. He emphasized the need to update and redefine this concept for modern Google, suggesting that the company is undergoing significant cultural changes as well as structural changes.
