GOP bill targets NPR, PBS funding amid Elon Musk’s DOGE audits

First on FOX: Republican lawmakers are renewing efforts to burn federal funds to NPR and PBS amid the upheaval of the Trump administration's federal bureaucracy.

According to legislative text previewed by Fox News Digital, Rep. Claudia Tenney suspends taxpayer dollars in the House of Representatives and a bill to stop taxpayer dollars to reduce national debt to cut existing federal funds. It's leading. .

“As a former newspaper owner and publisher, I understand the important role of balanced, nonpartisan media. Unfortunately, these taxpayer-funded outlets report the facts. Rather than doing so, they chose advocacy over accuracy, using public dollars to promote political agendas,” Tenney told Fox News Digital.

“Americans have hundreds of news and commentary sources, and there's no need to choose media funded by politically biased taxpayers,” a Senate counterpart told Fox News Digital. NPRs should freely compete in the marketplace of ideas using donations, but their public subsidies should end.”

Republicans have long targeted NPR and PBS, denounced both outlets for sharing liberal bias while receiving government funds.

Less than 1% of NPR funds come directly from the federal government, while other funds are indirectly allocated to subsidies and local member stations, and are allocated from paying fees to NPR. Over a third of the funds come from corporate sponsorships.

PBS also acquires a mixture of federal funds through other paths.

But the GOP's request to end federal allocations to both stores comes as the executive branch is eagerly searching for locations blocking government spending that doesn't match the Trump administration's agenda.

Elon Musk, who leads Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, has been critical of NPR in the past.

As soon as he got X, Musk temporarily attacked NPR with a “party to the nation” media label. This is usually reserved for the media sector of authoritarian governments.

Tenny's bill is one of several initiatives targeting NPR and PBS during this assembly. R-Ga, chairing the Doge subcommittee under the House Oversight Committee. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said he hopes the heads of each organization will testify before the new panel.
