A GOP staff member, Paul Tinkle, was reinstated on Monday after being let go from the Indiana Republican Party the previous Tuesday. His dismissal was linked to his use of the “OK” hand gesture during a group photo.
The Chairwoman of the state party, Lana Keesling, made a statement regarding Tinkle’s rehiring and expressed a public apology following an X post from Tinkle in which he shared that he was terminated without a chance to explain his actions. Keesling noted, “After learning more about the situation, it became clear that I did not have the full picture. I made the wrong decision regarding Paul’s employment, and I take full responsibility for it. I want to personally apologize to Paul for jumping to a conclusion that was not supported by the facts.”
I appreciate the party giving me my position back. I will be releasing a full statement later. So many people have assisted me throughout within the party. I wish I could thank all personally. I’m overwhelmed by the support of the past few days. Let’s get Max Engling elected!

In 2017, some online researchers alleged that the “OK” hand gesture was a covert sign for “white power,” suggesting those using it in photos were potentially signaling hidden racial views.
Tinkle defended his gesture, stating he intended to express “positive vibes” and added that he wasn’t sure what else to do with his hands in the picture.
He expressed frustration about being fired before he could offer his defense. “I pride myself as a person of character, and wish I could’ve defended myself in person,” he said.
1/ I wanted to give a career update for my friends and any potential conservative groups looking for an employee. This Tuesday, September 29th, I was fired by the Indiana Republican Party for making an OK symbol with my fingers. Yes, seriously. (1/8) https://t.co/GQnYYZKxAq

Keesling emphasized that Tinkle’s assistance will be essential as the election approaches. “With Election Day approaching, I am grateful for the people who give their time and energy to our party, and I look forward to having Paul back as part of that effort,” she said. “Together, we will continue working hard through November 3.”
Tinkle responded on X, thanking the party for reinstating him and mentioned he would provide a full statement soon. He expressed gratitude for the assistance he received within the party and said he wished he could thank everyone individually. “I’m overwhelmed by the support of the past few days,” he noted.
In his post, he also remarked, “Let’s get Max Engling elected!” referring to the party’s candidate for Indiana’s Secretary of State.
Speaking to the Daily Caller, Tinkle shared he was informed on Sunday about the offer to return to his job and expected to start back in the coming days.
