New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu (R) on Sunday lectured ABC host George Stephanopoulos after he tried to embarrass him. in support of donald trump.
There was a time during the 2024 election cycle when Sununu was outspoken in his opposition to Trump. After all, the governor had endorsed Nikki Haley in the Republican primary. But Ms. Haley lost, and Ms. Sununu now supports Mr. Trump, understanding that a second term in office for Mr. Trump is better than the alternative of a second term for President Joe Biden.
Of course, Sununu is not the only American who thinks that way. Polls have repeatedly shown that a slim majority of voters feel that way, and Sununu sought to make sure Stephanopoulos understands this reality.
In a controversial interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Stephanopoulos spoke about his past criticisms of Trump and his current support for Trump over Trump’s criminal trial in Manhattan and on January 6th. and lashed out at Sununu with questions designed to paint him as a huge hypocrite. Former president.
In all respects, Mr. Sununu did his best to educate Mr. Stephanopoulos about what voters actually cared about.
manhattan trial
Citing Trump’s poll numbers, Sununu explained why he doesn’t think Trump’s criminal trial will move the political needle.
”“This trial is not going to have any major political impact. This trial has been going on for over a year,” Sununu said of the Manhattan trial. [Trump’s] This problem doesn’t seem to reduce the number of polls. ”
“True story”
When Stephanopoulos asked Sununu why he wasn’t concerned about Trump’s crime problems, Sununu explained what he believed was the “real story” of this election.
“Do you know what the real story is? The average American who went from Biden back to Trump, the average American who feels the inflation and all the other problems, said, ‘Regardless of the conviction, it’s not going to happen. We want a conviction, no matter what.” The culture in Washington, D.C. is changing, and we will continue to support former President Trump, Sununu explained.
“The real argument is that America is moving away from Biden. It’s how bad Biden has gotten as president,” he continued. “You can’t ignore inflation. You can’t ignore the border and say these issues in the courts are going to be the only thing that gets Biden back in office. That’s not going to happen.”
January 6th
Stephanopoulos then turned the conversation to January 6 and Sununu. previous comment about it.
But Sununu has made it clear that he doesn’t think Jan. 6 is the key issue that will determine the winner of the election.
”[Voters] They want a culture of change in Washington, all the rules and policies that oppress the American people. “Everyone is awake,” Sununu said of voters, adding that “the liberal elites in Washington are standing on the shoulders of the hard-working American families who built this country and defended this country and are encouraging them to do the same. The fact is that he wants to teach people how to live.”
“They’re angry. They’re upset. That’s the culture change that people want,” he explained.
To his credit, Mr. Stephanopoulos admitted that he did not understand Mr. Sununu’s position. This is an obvious confession.
“That doesn’t make sense to me, Governor. I’m sorry,” Stephanopoulos said.
“I know it doesn’t make sense, but look at the polls. What you’re trying to tell me is you don’t understand why 51% of this country supports Donald Trump.” Sununu responded. “They’re not crazy. They’re not MAGA conservatives. They’re not extremists. They want a culture change.”
Ultimately, Sununu explained that it is true that media elites make statements like Stephanopoulos. Can not to understand.
“You’re a member of the media. I understand you’re in this New York City bubble or something, but you have to look around at what’s going on across this country.” Sununu said.
“It’s not just about supporting Trump. It’s about getting rid of what we have today. It’s about understanding that inflation is crushing families. This border issue is not about Texas. “It’s about understanding that this is a 50-state problem that has to be brought under control,” he explained. “This is the type of elite that the average American is tired of. It’s about principles. And that’s what I support. That’s what most Americans are trying to support right now. That’s what we want to change. It is.”
At no point in the interview did Stephanopoulos demonstrate a conceptual understanding of what Sununu was saying. Instead, he focused solely on Sununu’s decision to support Trump.
“In summary, would you support him as a presidential candidate even if he was convicted on classified documents? Even though you believe he contributed to the insurrection, would you support him as a presidential candidate? Would you support him as a presidential candidate? Even if you believed he was lying, you would support him as a presidential candidate even if he was convicted in the Manhattan case. Do you support him as a presidential candidate? The answer is yes, right? Stephanopoulos asked.
“Yeah, me and 51% of America,” Sununu retorted.
