GOP lawmaker predicts shutdown will be avoided

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) predicted Friday that a government shutdown would be avoided.

“Do you think Republicans can avoid a government shutdown?,” NewsNation's Blake Berman asked Harris on “The Hill.” “And do you think a shutdown would be an effective tool or not?”

“I can say with certainty that there will not be a government shutdown a month before the election,” Harris responded.

Lawmakers are racing to avoid a government shutdown by a deadline at the end of the month.

Former President Trump on Tuesday appeared to urge political parties to halt government funding in the absence of “assurances about election security” in the bill.

“If Republicans in the House and Senate cannot get absolute assurances about the security of our elections, then they should not be moving forward with a continuing budget resolution of any kind,” Trump said on Truth Social.

Last year, a fight within the GOP over government funding ultimately led to the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who was replaced by current Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), leaving the House in a state of turmoil.

In her interview with Berman, Harris said a government shutdown could be a “useful tool” far from an election.

With less than two months until this year's election, which will see key seats in both houses of Congress and the presidency at stake, Vice President Harris currently leads President Trump by 3.5 points in the Hill/Decision Desk average of national polls.
