Commemorating a Close Call for President Trump
It’s been a year since President Donald Trump narrowly avoided an assassination attempt during his infamous Pennsylvania rally. Republican lawmakers and officials now reflect on that day, believing they played a crucial role in saving the president’s life.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), among others, marked July 13, 2024, on social media, reminiscing about that fateful day.
“A year ago today, God miraculously saved President Trump’s life. He uses him to lead our country,” Johnson posted, sharing a video of Trump’s harrowing moments. In it, he can be seen pumping his fist, despite having a bloody face.
Thune echoed these sentiments, noting that Trump, “Thanks to God’s grace,” survived that life-threatening situation and expressed his prayers for peace.
On this somber anniversary, Thune reflected, “I pray for our country and the world, and for the loved ones of Corey Comperatore, who suffered incredible losses that day.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent commented on the “God’s intervention” that, he believes, altered the course of history during that event.
“He did not abandon him but instead rose to his feet with unwavering courage,” Bescent wrote. He added that, thanks to divine intervention, Trump continues to be a significant figure for future generations.
“President Trump will never stop fighting for the future of all Americans and our great nation,” Bescent emphasized.
Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) remarked that God was present when a shot rang out from Thomas Matthew Crooks’ gun. She stated unequivocally that “Americans will never forget that God was looking down on that fateful day.”
Stefanik also noted a sense of pride in how they managed to support America so soon after Trump assumed office and called for more transparency regarding the events of that day.
Other lawmakers like Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Katie Britt (R-AL), Bernie Moreno (R-OH), and Eric Schmitt (R-MO) also took to social media, referencing their beliefs in divine protection over Trump during the chilling incident.
Blackburn expressed her gratitude for Trump’s survival, reminding everyone that “Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.” Meanwhile, Britt recalled her deep appreciation for God allowing Trump to escape a terrible fate.
Moreno remarked that it’s undeniable God was involved in saving Trump that day, urging others to focus on the mission of saving America.
In a reflective post, Schmitt expressed that just a slight change in circumstances could have led to a much darker outcome. He captions his thoughts with gratitude for Trump’s relentless fighting spirit.
Lawmakers shared their reflections following a speech by Trump at the Republican National Convention just days after the assassination attempt, emphasizing the sentiment within the party.
The experiences shared by the lawmakers give a glimpse into the intense emotional and political landscape surrounding that incident, a day that many view as pivotal in shaping recent history.
