GOP leaders claim progress with black voters—but not with black women

Republicans are pinning their hopes on gaining support from this historically Democratic voting bloc, after the Trump campaign has made repeated efforts to win over black voters.

This comes as multiple Republican leaders told the Post that they expect gains among black men, but that black women will primarily choose Kamala Harris over the former president. It may become a battle of the sexes.

They may be right, as polls in some battleground states show a high percentage of black voters plan to vote for Donald Trump this term.

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) and Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.) have joined forces with Rep. Byron Donald (R-Fla.) to host “Trump's Congress, Cognac, and Cigars” social events in majority-black areas. Joined as part of the Coalition for Black Americans. Like Atlanta or Philadelphia. (Have any other cities done this?)

“Our idea was to go where Republicans haven't gone before and talk about the message, 'Was it better four years ago or is it better now?'” And most of “When black men, especially black men, are faced with that very serious question, the answer is usually President Trump,” Hunt told the Post.

While Hunt was optimistic about reaching out to black male voters, she acknowledged that black women are a different story when it comes to extending support to the Republican Party this November — primarily because their names are behind Democratic candidates. Because it's at the top.

“The election of Kamala Harris makes me less confident about Black women versus President Trump, because frankly, certain demographics vote based on identity. Kamala Harris is a Black woman. It’s a tough demographic for us to reach,” Hunt told the Post.

“But I believe President Trump will win more Black male votes than any Republican president in modern history.”

This view is also supported by Raphael Smith, a 42-year-old black man who supports Donald Trump in Michigan's 12th Congressional District.

“I think the reason black women are supporting Kamala more is because they are trying to empathize with them more,” Smith told the Post.

“Not just because she is a woman, but also because she is a woman of color. I don't think they are considering it.”

In Michigan, Donald Trump is trying to appeal to black voters by visiting a majority black church in June to promote his policies.

“They're coming for your job,” Trump told attendees at a June event. “And that's terrible…Black communities are the most harmed by illegal aliens.”

Jason Roe, a Michigan-based Republican strategist, also told the Post that Republicans are only gaining among black voters among men.

“As you can see in the polls, the rise of black men is real,” Roe told the Post. “Black women are not making any headway. It's great that black men are starting to make strides, but black men don't vote at the same rate as black women.”

No matter what gains the Republican Party makes among black voters, Republicans interviewed by the Post acknowledged that Democrats will still retain the majority of black voters in 2024.

“One of the things that Byron Donald and I have talked about is that we may not get as many people as we would like this cycle, but Byron Donald and I are not going anywhere,” said Congressman Wesley Hunt. ” he said.

Martell Bibbings, a black Republican congressional candidate in Detroit, told the Post he believes the Republican Party would be more successful with black voters if it invested more money into campaigns in these areas. .

“They're afraid to pay for that kind of work,” Bibbings said. “I talked to someone in the party and they said, 'It's going to take 10 years.' Baby, no, it's not. If you guys actually put up the money, it might take like 30 days.” No.”
