Tennessee Rep. Tim Burchett Named Chair of Efficiency Subcommittee

Tennessee Republican Representative Tim Burchett has officially been appointed as the chair of the House Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE), a branch of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Burchett’s new role was announced on Friday, following an indication from House Oversight Chair James Comer a week prior. Having been part of the subcommittee since its inception last year, Burchett plans to focus on reducing waste, specifically aiming at billions in improper federal payments.

Known for his humor and light-heartedness, Burchett also serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

“I am honored Chairman Comer has bestowed this great responsibility upon me,” Burchett commented in a news release. “The American people are fed up with wasteful spending and fraud in the federal government. Under my leadership, I will eliminate reckless spending, slash unnecessary bureaucratic red tape, and investigate the rampant fraud and abuse in government.”

Previously, Marjorie Taylor Greene, the former DOGE chair, resigned after a public fallout with former President Trump. She began questioning his platform, which led Trump to label her as a “traitor” and endorse a primary challenger against her.

Despite this, Burchett has remained a strong supporter of Trump, especially concerning the administration’s aims to cut government programs and reduce the federal workforce.

Following Trump’s second inauguration, the DOGE initiative was created, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the helm. The House subcommittee was established to support DOGE’s cost-cutting efforts and ensure legislative alignment with its goals.

In its early months, DOGE moved swiftly to highlight systemic inefficiencies in federal agencies. Trump’s push for significant fiscal reform led to attempts to centralize federal IT operations and eliminate thousands of jobs that were considered redundant.

While DOGE has been able to uncover notable instances of fraud, waste, and abuse, it has faced challenges in meeting its ambitious target of cutting $2 trillion from federal spending. Additionally, there haven’t been any publicly reported charges or arrests directly linked to DOGE’s findings or those of the House DOGE Subcommittee.

“When the American people elected President Trump in a landslide victory in 2024, he had a mandate from the voters to slash harmful spending and attack waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal bureaucracy,” Burchett stated. “I am looking forward to being a partner to President Trump, Chairman Comer, and my colleagues across the aisle to restore trust in government.”
