GOP Rep. Van Drew Describes Filibuster as 'Obstructive' and 'Damaging' — 'I'm Upset'

Van Drew Critiques Senate Filibuster

On Friday, during an interview on FBN’s “Mornings with Maria,” Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) expressed his dissatisfaction with the U.S. Senate, particularly regarding the use of the filibuster.

He labeled the decision to allow Democrats to filibuster the SAVE America Act as “shameful” and admitted to feeling “angry.”

In the discussion, Fox Business Network’s Jackie DeAngelis pointed out that the SAVE America Act requires voters to prove their citizenship when registering to vote, suggesting that it might have helped mitigate issues in New Jersey. She asked Van Drew if Congress could take all necessary steps to ensure the bill reaches the president by year’s end and about its chances of succeeding.

Van Drew responded, stating, “It still has a realistic chance. I’m profoundly disappointed with the Senate, and I think many voters feel let down as well. This issue is straightforward. To vote in an American election, you need to be an American and show ID. We’ve all heard the arguments—if you enter a liquor store or a federal building, or purchase a firearm, you need ID. The list goes on. This isn’t about suppressing votes; it’s about ensuring that American citizens are voting.

“The filibuster has been detrimental,” he added. “Originally, it was intended to prolong and enhance debate. Now it feels as though you need an almost super majority to accomplish anything. What’s the point of having a majority then? It’s obstructive and counterproductive, and while some senators may enjoy it, it’s against the desires of the American people. It’s disgraceful. They need to resolve this. We’ve passed it twice already; we can do it again. Failing to act will only frustrate the American people—and rightly so. I’m angry about it.”
