Rep. Victoria Spaatz (R-Indiana) was charged with a weapons violation after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents at Dulles International Airport (IAD) found a firearm in her carry-on luggage.
Spaatz, a native of Ukraine, was charged Friday with violating a Virginia law that bans carrying weapons inside airport terminals, a spokesperson for the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority (MWAA) confirmed to Breitbart News.
Virginia Law According to § 18.2-287.01, it is unlawful for any person to possess or carry into any airport terminal of any airline in the Commonwealth (i) a firearm or other weapon designed or intended to propel a missile or projectile of any kind, (ii) any frame, receiver, muffler, silencer, missile, projectile or ammunition designed for use with a dangerous weapon, and (iii) any other dangerous weapon, including explosives” and “stun weapons.”
A TSA spokesperson confirmed to Breitbart News that “IAD officers detected a .380 caliber firearm during passenger security screening.”
“The firearm was unloaded and was in a carry-on bag,” a TSA spokesperson said, noting that the agency “does not verify passenger names.”
A spokesperson provided background information that “passengers may travel with firearms,” but that “firearms must be securely stored in the passenger’s checked baggage,” “packed unloaded,” “locked in a hard-shell case,” and “declared to the airline when checking baggage at the ticket counter.”
“Last Friday, Congressman Spaatz accidentally brought an unloaded, unarmed handgun into the pocket of his suitcase while going through security at Dulles Airport,” Spaatz’s office said. Said In a statement New York Post.
