Funding Proposal Targeting New York City Mayor
House Republicans are looking to cut federal funding to New York City while Mayor Zoran Mamdani remains in office.
The bill, known as the Moving American Funds Away from Anti-National Interests Act, or the Mamdani Act, is being put forth by Republican Rep. Buddy Carter from Georgia.
The two-page proposal outlines that “despite any other laws,” during Mamdani’s tenure as New York’s mayor, “unobligated Federal funds available” for New York City would be canceled, and “no Federal funds shall be obligated or expended” for any purpose.
This legislation is set to be introduced on Friday, according to Fox News Digital.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old socialist, recently clinched victory in the New York mayoral election, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was running as an independent and a Republican candidate.
Observers expected this outcome, as New York City has not elected a Republican mayor since Michael Bloomberg’s second term in 2005.
Carter’s proposal, though unlikely to advance in the House, positions him as a major focus among Republicans who are keenly aware of Mamdani’s recent win.
A House Republican campaign official hinted to Fox News Digital that the party aims to unify vulnerable Democrats nationally around Mamdani and his leftist ideology.
Carter, who is currently campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, argued that his state’s taxpayers shouldn’t support initiatives that could financially burden a major economic center.
He expressed, “If New Yorkers want communism, we should grant their wishes and not artificially prop them up with a successful capitalist system.” He added, “Any New Yorker of good sense is welcome to move to the great and free state of Georgia.”
Interestingly, New York State has historically contributed more in taxes to the federal government than it receives back.
