Medicaid Fraud Concerns in Blue States
During an appearance on Fox Business Network’s “Evening Edit,” Rep. Greg Steube from Florida discussed how some blue states seem to overlook fraud in federal programs, especially Medicaid.
Florida Republicans reacted to Vice President J.D. Vance’s remarks about a lack of investigations and prosecutions in these states. Vance noted, “Hawaii’s Medicaid program receives billions from federal taxpayers. But how many convictions for Medicaid fraud have there been in Hawaii in recent years? The answer is zero. No indictments at all. If you’re committing fraud in Hawaii’s Medicaid, it seems you can do so without consequence.” He compared this to New York, which had nine indictments last year, while Indiana, with a population comparable to a third of New York’s, reported significantly more indictments during the same period.
Steube argued that these states allow fraud to persist while increasing spending on government programs.
Host Elizabeth MacDonald asked Steube about Vance’s assertion that blue states lack interest in addressing fraud compared to red states. “What’s your take on this?” she inquired.
Steube replied, “Absolutely, they’re enabling fraud in these Democratic states to boost federal funding coming in. I really hope the Department of Justice looks into this. With the president and vice president focused on the matter, a potential solution could be withholding federal funds until these states tackle the fraud and waste occurring within their programs.”
MacDonald then brought up how these states have responded negatively to the idea of funding being withheld.
Steube agreed, stating, “If federal money for these programs is cut off, they will definitely react.”
