GOP Representative Suggests Mitch McConnell May Not Be in Washington, D.C.

Concerns Surround Mitch McConnell’s Health

Kentucky Republican Representative Brett Guthrie expressed doubts about Senator Mitch McConnell’s presence in Washington, D.C., after the senator has been missing from public events for weeks due to health issues.

In a video posted by Keeley Dole from the Courier Journal, Guthrie mentioned he had communicated with McConnell’s team via text but hadn’t talked with him directly. He believes McConnell has had recent conversations with other senators.

“I think he will recover and hope to see him back in Washington soon,” Guthrie told reporters. “We really need him here.”

Guthrie’s comments seem to suggest a conflicting scenario regarding McConnell’s hospitalization, which has reportedly been ongoing since June 14. He also shared a personal note, saying, “McConnell has been a mentor and friend of mine. My thoughts and prayers are with him.”

McConnell was admitted to George Washington University Hospital after being found unconscious at home, and specific details about his condition have not been disclosed by his office.

When approached about Guthrie’s remarks implying that McConnell may not be in D.C. right now, a spokesperson clarified that he was referring to the senator’s return to the Senate floor rather than his physical location.

McConnell has faced several health challenges over the years. In recent public appearances, he has displayed concerning symptoms, including episodes where he appeared to freeze while speaking.

At 83 years old, McConnell has announced plans to step down as Senate Republican leader in 2024 and confirmed he wouldn’t pursue re-election when his current term ends in January 2027.
