Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) on Friday condemned the United Auto Workers (UAW)’s calls for the release of students and university employees arrested as part of pro-Palestinian protests on campuses across the country.
In a post on social platform Stated.
UAW President Sean Fein criticized the mass arrests of university protesters earlier this week and emphasized the union’s support for a long-term ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.
“The UAW will never support mass arrests or intimidation of people exercising their right to protest, strike, or speak out against injustice,” Fein said Wednesday. “Our union has been calling for a ceasefire for six months.”
“This war is wrong, and so is this response to students and faculty, including many UAW members,” he continued. “We call on the powers that be to release the arrested students and staff. If you cannot stand the protests, please stop supporting this war.”
Following Columbia University’s lead, demonstrators on other campuses have in recent weeks protested Israel’s war operations in Gaza and called on universities to divest from Israeli companies and defense companies that supply weapons to Israel. They are forming a camp.
More than 2,000 people have been arrested at campus protests across the country since April 18, according to the Associated Press.
