GOP Speaker Mike Johnson cruises to victory

House Speaker Mike Johnson was declared the winner Tuesday night for his efforts to hold onto Louisiana's 4th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

The four-term congressman, first elected in 2016, rose to prominence as a leader in the Republican Party last year after being selected by his colleagues to replace former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California. Mr. Johnson previously served as vice chair of the House Republican Conference.

Even if Republicans retain the House majority after Tuesday's election, Mr. Johnson's future as party leader remains uncertain. Johnson said he wants to continue in a leadership role if Republicans retain control of the House of Commons.

However, there is no indication as to what the plan would be if that were not the case. According to NBC News, people close to Johnson say he is likely to resign.
