The American Voter Eligibility Protection Act passed the House of Representatives on Wednesday with every Republican voting in favor of the bill. Only five Democrats supported the bill, while 198 voted against it.
The bill was created to take further steps to ensure that only U.S. citizens can vote in elections. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), sponsor of the SAVE Act, said the bill is necessary to protect elections in the face of a three-year border crisis caused by President Joe Biden’s administration.
The SAVE Act now heads to the Senate, where passage is not guaranteed due to the narrow Democratic majority. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) is expected to voice his unanimous support for the bill this afternoon and speak about the White House’s opposition to the bill.
Democrats have argued, without evidence, that the bill is akin to Jim Crow laws.
Unanimous consent in the Senate means an agreement on any issue or matter that ignores procedural rules to speed things up. If any senator objects, the proposal is blocked. Lee’s office expects Democrats to voice opposition. In response, Lee is exploring ways to attach the SAVE Act to the next “must-pass” budget bill.
Unlike the House, the bill would only need a handful of purple-state Democrats to break away from the Democratic majority expected to vote no, particularly in border states like Arizona, to pass the Senate.
The Biden Administration has previously explained its reasons for opposing the SAVE Act.
“The purported basis for this bill is based on easily disproven lies. … This bill would do nothing to secure our elections, make it more difficult for all Americans to register to vote, and increase the risk that voters will be removed from the voter rolls. Existing laws preventing foreign nationals from voting are clearly working as intended. It is extremely rare for foreign nationals to break the law by voting in a federal election,” the statement said.
When the House of Representatives debated the bill in a plenary session, Democrats argued without justification that the bill resemble It violated Jim Crow laws andXenophobic attacks“About immigration.”
