Gotham FC Eyes Trophy Despite Goal Drought
It’s been almost a month since Gotham FC found the back of the net. Yet, they stand on the brink of a trophy opportunity.
This week, they’ll travel to Mexico in pursuit of the Concacaf W Champions Cup, a tournament featuring club teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Winning this cup would be a fantastic addition to the cabinet, joining Gotham’s 2023 NWSL Championship title.
On Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM, they will take on Club America, who was last week’s runner-up, at the Estadio University Rio in Monterrey.
Scorer Esther Gonzalez, who recently secured a two-year contract extension, said, “I think it’s going to be a very wild game. We’ve been prepping since the preseason and are looking forward to this match. We believe we’re ready. It’ll be a tough challenge, but I think we can achieve a great result.”
Currently, Gotham is in a tricky spot, sitting in eighth place in the NWSL after failing to score in their last three matches (one draw, two losses).
Coach Juan Carlos Amoros reflected on the situation after their 1-0 loss to San Diego, saying, “It feels a bit like the start of the season when we struggled to find the net. We eventually found our form, scoring goals regularly, but now we’re in a similar stretch.”
Gotham made it to the semi-finals by finishing second in the group stages of the tournament last October with a record of two wins and two draws, a feat accomplished before several key players joined the roster.
If they advance, they will face the winner between the Portland Thorns of the NWSL and Tigres UANL of Liga MX.
As player Schupansky mentioned, “After the last three matches, we just want to be more aggressive and eager to play at our best levels. We’re looking to get back to winning, whether it’s in league play or tournaments. We’re really excited; the team has worked hard to get here.”
