Gotham’s Season Resumes with Victory Over Bay FC
Gotham’s season reached a notable point on Saturday, concluding the first segment with a 2-1 win against Bay FC at Sports Illustration Stadium. Both veterans and newcomer Esther Gonzalez made impactful comebacks during the match, scoring within 12 minutes of each other.
Gonzalez capitalized on a defensive lapse from Bay, scoring during a 30-minute window when they struggled to protect their goal. In the second half, Geyse found ample space to score, extending Gotham’s lead. Despite Bay’s attempts to equalize over the final 35 minutes, they were unable to break through, allowing Gotham to head into a nearly six-week hiatus for international matches with momentum.
As they prepare to resume play on August 1, Gotham will be vying for playoff spots, with prospects of a straightforward path to the postseason as well as some complex routes to reach championship levels they saw last year.
Saturday’s victory marked only the second time this season Gotham has managed back-to-back wins in the NWSL. Still, this early phase has been heavily focused on adjustments.
It’s a juggling act, really—shifting the lineup to integrate new talent after the offseason. There’s also the anticipation surrounding the return of key player, Rose Lovell, who is expected to bring energy once back in the starting position.
Gonzalez stands out with her impressive performance, marking a League-high ten goals this season, alongside the other stars like Ravel and Emily Sonnet. However, the new super team dynamics seem to have disrupted the flow somewhat.
“It’s an ongoing adaptation, but we know this league well,” commented coach Juan Carlos Amoros after the match. “Winning is crucial for us to climb the standings. I believe that reflects the mindset of our players.” He paused, adding, “But we also have to recognize that we have quite a few young faces on the team, and gaining experience is invaluable.”
At this stage, Amoros is experimenting—connecting new players to unfamiliar roles, hoping to see what works. Geyse, having joined on loan from Manchester United, scored the second goal of the match to put Gotham ahead.
A total of six rookies were featured during Saturday’s game, including midfielder Sarah Spansky, who assisted Gonzalez for the equalizer.
“We haven’t leaned heavily on rookies in past seasons, but it really brings a refreshing vibe to both the locker room and the field,” said midfielder Nelly Martin.
Gotham also had rookie Lily Real playing out of her usual position at center-back. Notably, she recently received her first call-up to the US women’s national team for upcoming training camps, reflecting her impressive growth.
Real had previously shone at UCLA, where her coach, Margherit Azasa, had moved her to a defensive role. Yet, it seemed Azasa recognized an urge within Real to be more adventurous on the pitch—sometimes trying to dribble down the field, which, as Azasa mentioned, often succeeded, much to her approval.
Of course, Gotham has faced its share of growing pains throughout this season. There are sure to be more challenges ahead as the team navigates the complexities of lineup changes. Yet, according to Martin, the foundational work on their defensive strategies has begun to pay off. As the confusion from the offseason settles, Gotham is eager to transform the recent momentum into a sustained run of success.
