Gotham FC Secures Playoff Spot with Draw Against Louisville FC
Gotham FC played to a 2-2 draw with Louisville FC on Sunday, a match that helped the NWSL team secure a playoff position.
In the 85th minute, Rose Lavelle took a free kick from about 22 yards out, placing it in the corner of the net to equalize. This marked Gotham’s third consecutive appearance in the playoffs.
“For set-pieces, it’s really about reading the defenders and where the goalkeeper is. We felt we could get at least a point. It wasn’t a matter of if; it was about when. I just wish we could have scored that third goal. We need to keep polishing our skills in training and ensure we are sharp. It all starts there,” Lavelle commented after the game.
With one week left in the NWSL season, Gotham still has an opportunity to secure a top-four finish, allowing them to host the first round of the playoffs.
Currently, Gotham sits in 7th place in the league standings.
It’s interesting to note that the club is just two years removed from winning the NWSL title and is experiencing the most successful stretch in its history.
Before their championship win in 2023, Gotham had only made the playoffs twice in 2013 and 2021.
Coach Juan Carlos Amorós emphasized the importance of reaching the playoffs: “For Gotham Football Club to be in such a tough league, particularly in the last few years, shows real consistency. I want to commend the players and staff for their hard work. They faced numerous challenges, like midweek games and losing key players. They demonstrated resilience today. The team definitely earned a solid win.”
The NWSL playoffs are set to begin on November 7, with Gotham’s last regular season match scheduled for November 2 against NC Courage.
