Gotham FC's general manager outlines the next goal for the defending champions

Gotham FC’s Title Defense Plans for the Upcoming Season

This week, Gotham FC’s General Manager, Yael Apfelbusch-West, shared her annual message to fans, brimming with excitement for the club’s title defense ahead of the new season.

But beyond just enthusiasm, Averbuch-West underscored the organization’s relentless ambition to achieve excellence consistently.

Gotham has built quite the reputation as a formidable postseason contender, clinching two NWSL championships in the last three years. However, maintaining that level of performance throughout the regular season has proven to be a different story.

From Gotham’s perspective, settling for anything less than top-tier performance is simply unacceptable.

In her letter, Apfelbusch-West set clear expectations for 2026, aiming to hold the organization accountable.

“One of our goals is to be a consistently top-four team in the NWSL and a genuine Shield contender,” she stated. “We want consistency. Our aim is to showcase our best football during the playoffs and to make sure our regular season reflects the championship standards we strive for.”

In a chat with the media prior to Saturday’s season opener against Boston, Averbuch-West echoed these sentiments.

“We have very ambitious goals,” she remarked. “While we were frustrated with the last season, we also felt satisfaction with how it ended.”

It’s almost symbolic that Gotham kicks off its title defense at Gillette Stadium, a venue known for hosting some of the most successful teams in sports history. The club aspires to achieve a level of success akin to that of the Patriots, even if rival fans are understandably weary of their consistent excellence.

Under Juan Carlos Amoros’s leadership, Gotham seems to thrive at crucial moments, yet the organization expects even more from its team.

“We’ve experienced a mix of results, but we haven’t yet achieved the dominant performance we’d like to see throughout the season,” said Averbuch-West. “It will take time and ongoing progress, but we’re genuinely ambitious about reaching new heights in consistent performance.”

This ambition leads to bold moves, like the recent signing of Guro Leiten from Chelsea FC.

However, it also involves making difficult decisions, such as parting ways with popular forward Gabi Portillo, who was traded to the San Diego Wave last week.

“We’re always evaluating our future and what it means for our players,” Apfelbusch-West explained. “Saying goodbye is tough, but ultimately, I believe it was the right choice for all involved.”

Gotham has kept a solid core intact, including 2025’s top scorer, Esther Gonzalez, along with Midge Purse, Rose Lovell, Jaedyn Shaw, Jaelynn Howell, Emily Sonnett, Bruninha, and goaltender Ann-Katrin Berger.

Additionally, they’ve added new talent, including former Florida State standout Jordyn Dudley and Stanford forward Andrea Kitahata.

The team had the briefest offseason in the league. After concluding last season, the reigning CONCACAF champions gathered in January to represent the NWSL in FIFA’s inaugural World Women’s Club Competition.

Gotham had aspirations of hosting the Women’s Champions Cup, a way to extend the momentum from their 2025 championship and perhaps begin 2026 with a world title. Unfortunately, they fell short, losing to Corinthians from Brazil in the semifinals.

“We gained a lot from that experience,” Averbuch-West remarked. “We were disappointed with the outcome. Our goal was to win, and we certainly wanted to reach the finals. But we knew it would be a challenging match, and we didn’t perform to our expectations.”

This season, Gotham aims to utilize those hard-learned lessons.

So, what is Apfelbusch-West’s primary focus for this season?

“The key is consistency throughout the season,” she clarified. “That doesn’t imply you have to start at your peak from Game 1. What I’ve appreciated about Juan’s approach is that the team tends to strengthen and peak at the right moments, which is crucial. Simultaneously, a more consistent execution would help us better understand what level we can bring in each half of every match.”
