Gotham FC Faces Challenges Ahead of NWSL Shield Opportunity
Gotham FC has another chance to secure the NWSL Shield this weekend, but they’ll have to do so without two key players: Jaedyn Shaw and Rose Lavelle, both crucial to the team’s scoring efforts.
Coach Juan Carlos Amorós confirmed on Saturday that Shaw, dealing with a knee issue, and Lavelle, suffering from a neck problem, will miss the match against Orlando on Sunday. This adds to the mounting injury challenges the team faces as they try to wrap up their successful regular season with a trophy.
The team has already lost defender Bruninha and rookie forward Jordyn Dudley to season-ending injuries earlier this month. “It’s part of the game,” Amorós commented on Friday. “When there’s a problem, you can either dwell on it or seek out solutions. We always look for solutions.”
Over the past seven months, Gotham has experienced the absence of nearly a dozen players, including Esther González, who left to join a Saudi club after mutually terminating her contract in July.
“An individual doesn’t win the competition; it’s about the entire roster,” said Amorós. “So, we focus on ensuring everyone is prepared to contribute when needed.”
Throughout this season, Gotham FC has consistently ranked near the top of the NWSL standings. Now, with two regular-season games remaining, they find themselves amid a tight race for the NWSL Shield, which goes to the team with the best regular-season record.
Currently, Gotham is in first place with 55 points, followed closely by the San Diego Wave with 54 points and the Washington Spirit at 52.
To clinch the Shield on Sunday, Gotham must win their match and hope that the Wave loses to Boston Legacy FC while the Spirit must either lose or draw against the Kansas City Current.
Amorós noted that the team hasn’t extensively talked about the scenarios that could clinch their victory. “Of course, we know it’s a possibility, but ultimately, it’s out of our control,” he remarked. “What matters is winning the game.”
Missing Shaw, who’s been the team’s top scorer with 10 goals, along with Lavelle’s four goals will undoubtedly complicate things. Gotham has had its struggles in making the most of scoring opportunities, with only 35 goals—ranking as the third fewest in the league.
On the defensive front, however, Gotham has excelled, allowing the least number of goals in the league at 22 this season.
“We need to focus on the small details of the game and then just play our style,” said Amorós. “That’s part of who we are.”
