Gotham FC edged closer to winning the NWSL Shield with a 2-1 win against the Orlando Pride on Sunday.
Despite being without six players, including major stars like Rose Lavelle and Jaedyn Shaw, as well as head coach Juan Carlos Amorós who was sidelined with a stomach bug, Gotham’s offense was led by Midge Purce and Tierna Davidson.
Purce opened the scoring with a header in the 22nd minute, thanks to a precise cross from Guro Reiten.
Davidson added a vital second goal in the 62nd minute, pouncing on a rebound after a Reiten shot hit the crossbar.
Orlando responded just three minutes later with a goal from Solai Washington to narrow the gap, but Gotham held firm to secure the win.
“I think what’s contributed to this is just kind of the togetherness — everyone’s kind of backs against the wall,” noted Gotham assistant coach Shaun Harris in a post-match discussion.
While Gotham had the chance to clinch the franchise’s first NWSL Shield on that day, they didn’t receive all the necessary support. Kansas City Current triumphed over the Washington Spirit, yet the Boston Legacy and San Diego Wave ended their match in a draw, meaning Gotham will have to wait until Decision Day next Sunday to actually secure the title.
To win the regular-season crown, Gotham needs to beat Utah on Decision Day.
If they succeed, it would be their first NWSL Shield, adding to their 2026 achievements after clinching the NWSL Challenge Cup back in June.
Gotham has one more regular-season game scheduled for November 1 before heading into the playoffs, where they are expected to face off against the No. 8 seed if the current standings remain unchanged.
