Gottheimer Defends Democratic Values Amid Republican Criticism

During Thursday’s segment on “CNN News Central,” Representative Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) asserted that Democrats are the only ones genuinely addressing important issues, while Republicans focus on distracting voters with discussions around DSA candidates and their ideologies. He expressed that many in the Democratic Party share concerns about these distractions, stating, “I don’t believe they’re part of our values in the Democratic Party.”

Co-host Boris Sanchez inquired about the Republican strategy of framing Democrats as socialists and communists, particularly highlighting the more extreme candidates and their controversial policies, like calls to abolish police and prisons. He sought Gottheimer’s perspective on how these tactics might be received by voters in crucial swing states.

Gottheimer responded, “I don’t think they’re going to be very successful. This is a routine strategy for them. They identify a few outliers and then try to portray them as representative of all Democrats. It’s important to clarify that the DSA, or the socialists, aren’t Democrats; they’re socialists and should have their own party. Their views don’t align with ours, particularly on issues like defunding the police or advocating for no borders. Those ideas are clearly not in line with what we stand for.”

Continuing, he emphasized that Democrats are prioritizing concerns like affordability and exposing corruption within the current administration. He shared his personal experiences in New Jersey, noting that the message is resonating with constituents who are grappling with rising costs and feel misled by the administration’s claims of making life more affordable. “There’s a lot of strain right now. People are struggling,” he said, adding that Democrats are focused on real issues. He concluded by asserting that while Republicans might try to divert attention, they are not succeeding, and many in the Democratic Party recognize and voice the same concerns.
