Government shutdown could postpone the announcement of the 2026 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment.

Potential Delay in Social Security Adjustments for Seniors

Many seniors might find themselves waiting a bit longer to learn about the increase in their social security checks for next year.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is expected to announce the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) for 2026 on October 15. However, if many employees from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) are unavailable due to government shutdowns, important economic reports—including updates on inflation—could be postponed.

It’s worth noting that the SSA relies on inflation reports to calculate annual COLA, so any delays may affect the announcement timing. Nonetheless, even if COLA updates are postponed, Social Security payments will continue without interruption.

“The government shutdown could delay the COLA announcement, but it’s important to remember that the data is from September and has already been gathered,” said Mary Johnson, an independent analyst focused on Social Security and Medicare.

Interestingly, a similar delay occurred in October 2013 regarding the COLA announcement.

Recently, the Senior Citizens League (TSCL) estimated that if the announcement happens mid-October, the COLA might stand at 2.7%. This change could raise the average monthly benefit for retirees from $2,008 to $2,062.

The SSA’s adjustments account for inflation and price increases, ensuring beneficiaries’ payments remain relevant to living costs.

Last year, the COLA was reported at 2.5% and was enacted at the start of the year.

The SSA has not yet responded to requests for further comments.
