Government shutdown reaches Day 22 as Senate Democrats prevent reopening for the 12th time

Government Shutdown Enters 22nd Day

The government shutdown has reached its 22nd day, with no resolution in sight. A Republican attempt to reopen the government fell flat on Wednesday, facing a block from Senate Democrats that evening.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his fellow Democrats thwarted Republican efforts to reopen the government for the twelfth time. This came after a request from Schumer to meet with President Trump and a lengthy filibuster by Senator Jeff Merkley, which delayed the vote until late Wednesday.

Merkley, in a lengthy speech that began Tuesday evening, discussed what he described as authoritarianism, criticizing the Trump administration’s actions on immigration and the separation of powers.

“Republicans have shut down the government to advance their agenda of reducing healthcare for Americans,” Merkley stated. He emphasized that this focus on healthcare is obstructing government funding discussions. He wrapped up his remarks at 5 PM on Wednesday.

Not much has shifted in the Senate since the shutdown began. Schumer and Senate Democrats are pushing for a robust agreement to continue expired Obamacare subsidies, while Senate Republicans insist that nothing can progress until the government is reopened.

Schumer Seeks Meeting with Trump

Schumer, representing House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, has requested another meeting with Trump prior to the vote to try to reach a consensus with Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other Republicans. While informal discussions have taken place between the parties, they haven’t led to any significant progress in ending the stalemate.

“Hakeem and I reached out to the president urging him to negotiate so we can address the health crisis and end the Trump shutdown,” Schumer remarked. He expressed concern that conditions are worsening daily for the American populace. “He needs to engage with us seriously before leaving the situation as is,” Schumer added.

The last occasion that top Democrats met with Trump was right before a critical vote meant to prevent a government shutdown. No deals were struck during that encounter, which ended without progress.

Trump’s Position on the Shutdown

As we approach the fourth week of the shutdown, Trump indicated he would be willing to talk with Schumer and Jeffries, but only once the government is reopened. “The government has to be operational,” he commented, highlighting the straightforwardness of the situation. “People seem to complicate what should be a simple solution.”

He went further, arguing that Democrats are framing their loss in negotiations as a victim narrative, while he maintains that their losses are detrimental to the nation.

The Democrats originally aimed to bolster the Obamacare tax credits and set firm limitations on Trump’s authority to withdraw congressionally approved funds as part of their plan following the House’s Continuing Resolution.

Trump’s Administration Stays Firm

A White House official reiterated Trump’s stance, stating, “We refuse to engage in policy discussions while the Democrats hold the American people hostage. Our priority is to get the government back up and running.”

Democrats seek more than just an extension of pandemic-related subsidies; their key concerns revolve around tax credits.

Thune has suggested that Senate Democrats vote on the subsidies, but they have refrained from progressing, aiming for a favorable outcome in the ongoing shutdown. With both Republicans and the White House resistant to Schumer’s requests, it seems difficult for anything to move forward.

“We’re looking for clear agreement from the Democrats,” Thune remarked. “We’ve offered numerous concessions, including standard spending procedures and chances to vote on their desired issues regarding expiring Obamacare enhancements. However, nothing can happen unless we first reopen the government.”
