Christian Couple’s Custody Battle Ends in Heartbreak

A Christian couple’s struggle to reunite with their daughters has faced a significant setback from Europe’s highest court.

Daniel and Bianca Samson have been battling the Swedish government for custody of their two eldest daughters since December 2022, as reported by Alliance Defending Freedom International.

On March 10, the European Court of Human Rights ruled the Samsons’ case as “inadmissible.” This decision is final and cannot be appealed. The separation reportedly stemmed from a false allegation made by their eldest daughter, Sara.

According to reports, Sara made a false claim at school regarding her parents’ refusal to allow her to have a phone or wear makeup, which led to accusations of “religious extremism.” Even though she later retracted her statement, the girls have been apart from their parents—and from each other—since December 2022. The state found no evidence of abuse throughout the investigation. At the time, Sara was 11 and her sister Tiana was 10.

“The state has used the family’s regular attendance at church—three times a week—as evidence of ‘religious extremism.’ However, this is simply an expression of their faith, which is protected under international human rights law. Currently, the Samsons are permitted only one supervised visit each month, further complicated by the fact that their daughters are placed in separate foster homes located far apart,” ADF International stated.

Since being separated from their parents, both girls have reportedly attempted suicide.

This raises questions about what constitutes “religious extremism.” For instance, if frequent church attendance qualifies as such, what about those who pray five times a day or adhere to dietary restrictions?

If Sweden aims to address religious extremism, perhaps it should focus more on its Muslim population. “Clan-based crime” has become an “epidemic” in the country, according to The Spectator. Reports indicate that “humiliation robberies,” which involve degrading acts against victims, are predominantly carried out by foreign-born gang members or their children. These crimes often involve violence and sexual humiliation.

It seems Sweden’s stance suggests that one can celebrate Christian holidays and attend church occasionally, as long as their faith isn’t taken too seriously. The prevailing ideology appears to prioritize individual autonomy over deeper truths or communal values.
