Investigation into Former Special Advisor Jack Smith

The US Office of Special Counsel (OSC) is looking into former Special Advisor Jack Smith, following a request that came through Fox News.

Smith was appointed in 2022 by former Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee investigations involving former President Donald Trump.

The OSC’s inquiry focuses on potential violations of the Hatch Act, which restricts government employees from engaging in certain political activities. It’s important to note that this is not a criminal investigation.

Fox News Digital attempted to get a comment from the White House on Saturday but didn’t receive any response.

Claims Against Trump’s Candidate

Smith’s current position has sparked some controversy. Recently, claims of anti-Semitism and his association with individuals who deny the Holocaust have been refuted by the office that Smith leads.

The OSC is distinct from the special advisers appointed by the Attorney General. According to its website, the OSC functions as an “independent federal investigation and prosecutor’s agency.”

It derives its authority from several federal laws, including the Civil Service Reform Act and the Whistleblower Protection Act.

Trump Labels Smith as “Desperate”

Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton has called upon the OSC to probe whether Smith was unlawfully involved in activities that could affect Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

In a letter dated July 30, Cotton wrote, “We ask the Special Advisor’s Bureau to investigate whether Jack Smith, advisor to Attorney General Merrick Garland, illegally took political action to influence the 2024 election in order to harm then-President Donald Trump.”

He emphasized that Trump has triumphed over various political adversaries, yet he believes that Smith’s actions need scrutiny concerning illegal election interference.
