Governor Criticizes Antisemitism Ban in Classrooms as ‘Assaulting Our Educators’

Arizona Governor Rejects Anti-Semitism Bill

On Tuesday, Arizona’s Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs turned down a proposed bill that sought to prohibit teachers from promoting anti-Semitism or related behaviors in classrooms.

The Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Centre (TJMHC) voiced concerns, claiming the bill could actually undermine education about the Holocaust. They argued it was crucial for combating discrimination against Jews. In her rejection letter, Hobbs highlighted that the bill could “attack our public education system” and “unfairly target public school teachers.”

Hobbs stated, “Anti-Semitism is a tragedy in our society and a deeply troublesome issue in our country. Unfortunately, this bill is not about anti-Semitism; it’s about attacking teachers. It imposes an unacceptable level of personal liability for educators and staff across all public educational institutions, leading to potential costly litigation.”

The TJMHC did not respond immediately to requests for comment from relevant news organizations.

The proposed legislation would have allowed students, parents, or even school staff to lodge complaints against teachers, particularly regarding lessons considered to constitute harassment or create hostile educational environments associated with anti-Semitism. If a teacher was found to have “recklessly violated” the bill, they could face personal liability in court.

This measure would have applied to university staff as well, and the initial infractions could result in formal responsibilities, suspension, or even revocation of teaching certificates.

In 2024, Hobbs had previously signed a measure expanding Holocaust education requirements for Arizona students, showing her commitment to such educational efforts.

Hobbs’ office has not yet commented on further inquiries regarding this latest decision.
