Virginia’s New Chief Diversity Officer Appointed

Virginia’s incoming Democratic governor, Abigail Spanberger, has appointed Dr. Sesha Joy Moon as the state’s Chief Diversity Officer and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Moon previously served as the chief brand strategist for Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett. This announcement was made in a statement on Tuesday, ahead of Spanberger’s inauguration on January 17th.

Spanberger expressed that Moon’s extensive background in government, education, and nonprofit sectors equips him with a unique perspective essential for enhancing life in Virginia. “I’m truly excited to have Dr. Moon join our administration,” Spanberger remarked, emphasizing the need for leadership that prioritizes the welfare of all Virginians. She stated, “When every Virginian can pursue their true potential, we all benefit.”

In her response, Moon, who identifies as a “Black queer woman” and holds a doctorate in public administration and policy, conveyed her enthusiasm for collaborating with Spanberger’s cabinet to foster accessibility to opportunities, particularly for underserved communities. “I look forward to being part of this historic administration,” she noted, highlighting a commitment to inclusivity.

Moon’s recent role was as the chief impact officer for the Girl Scouts of the United States. Before that, she was involved in various capacities, including being the diversity director for the U.S. House of Representatives during the 117th and 118th Congresses under different speakers. Her advocacy work has included roles in initiatives led by Stacey Abrams’ DEI network.

Reflecting on the current state of diversity efforts, Moon stated, “I know some people think our discipline is crumbling, but I believe we’re making strides.” She reaffirmed her belief in the importance of DEI initiatives, countering criticisms by stressing that the work continues despite opposition.

Spanberger recently secured a significant victory in the gubernatorial election, overcoming Republican candidate Winsome Earl Sears by a margin of over ten points. This win marks a shift in the Virginia Governor’s Mansion back to Democratic hands after a Republican tenure.

Fox News Digital attempted to contact Spanberger, Moon, Crockett, Abrams, and the Girl Scouts of the United States for comments but did not receive responses by the time of publication.
