Governor Hochul supports Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City after a wait of almost three months.

Support for NYC’s Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani

After nearly three months of deliberation, New York’s Democratic leaders have endorsed Zohran Mamdani as the city’s mayoral candidate.

“New York City deserves a mayor who can challenge Donald Trump and make life easier for its residents. That’s @Zohrankmamdani,” Governor Kathy Hochul shared on social media late Sunday.

The governor’s backing is significant, likely helping Mamdani win over other influential party members. It also adds pressure on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, both of whom have yet to endorse him.

Mamdani expressed gratitude for the governor’s support, highlighting their shared commitment to making New York a better place—securing free meals for children, enhancing childcare access, and standing up to Trump.

Trump’s New Nickname for Mamdani

Hochul’s endorsement comes for Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist legislator who gained attention in June. “In recent months, I had a candid conversation with him. While we had some disagreements, I recognized his dedication to ensuring children grow up safely and families have opportunities,” the governor stated.

Mamdani’s Poll Position in the Mayoral Race

If elected, Mamdani would be the first Muslim mayor of the most populous city in the U.S. and the first millennial to hold the position. Recent polls show him in a strong lead among Democratic candidates.

According to surveys from Quinnipiac University and others, he’s shown a 22-point lead in several key areas, while Emerson University reports he’s comfortably ahead by double digits.

Candidates Shake Up in the Race

Republican Curtis Sliwa, the candidate for the Democratic-dominated city, sits far behind in the polls, along with incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is now running independently after skipping the Democratic primary.

Both Sliwa and Adams have recently reiterated their commitment to stay in the race, despite speculation regarding potential withdrawal discussions involving Trump’s advisors offering them roles in his administration.

Mamdani’s campaign has surged largely thanks to a focus on affordability amidst New York’s high living costs. His energetic grassroots efforts have drawn support from notable progressives like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.

Additionally, Mamdani has effectively utilized social media, outlining proposals to eliminate public transport fares and provide free childcare and housing. However, he’s faced criticism for his views on the New York City Police Department and his suggestions to shift certain responsibilities away from law enforcement towards community services.

During discussions, Hochul emphasized the importance of police resources for public safety and addressed Mamdani’s previous remarks regarding Israel and anti-Semitism. “It’s crucial that he listens to and addresses community concerns,” she stated.

Hochul’s endorsement not only helps Mamdani but may also gain favor with Democratic progressives in re-election efforts. She highlighted a shared vision for economic improvement in New York.

Criticism from the Republican Side

However, Republican Representative Elise Stefanik has criticized Hochul for her support of Mamdani, calling him a “raging communist.” She argues that Hochul’s association with him prioritizes criminals over the safety and wellbeing of New Yorkers.
