Court Ruling Impacts National Guard Response to Los Angeles Riots
Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, expressed surprise over a recent injunction that prevented the National Guard from being activated to address the riots in Los Angeles. He emphasized the significance of a ruling from the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that overturned an injunction from Judge Charles Breyer of the Northern District of California. Turley referred to the appellate decision as “problematic” due to the issues it highlighted.
“This is definitely a critical topic for Governor Newsom. It derailed his narrative about combating tyranny,” Turley mentioned during an appearance on “Faulkner Focus” with guest host Jacqui Heinrich. “The courts have essentially indicated that you are on the opposing side of the rule of law, and there is statutory discretion granted to him.” He noted that the appellate ruling effectively halted the district court’s decision, which many found concerning, especially given the district judge’s suggestion that President Trump resembled King George.
Turley stated, “This ruling casts aside a topical perspective that some Democratic politicians had, affirming that the Ninth Circuit recognizes this authority.”
In the wake of ICE operations leading to unrest in Los Angeles, there are calls from some Democrats to suspend these actions to “restore order.” Resistance to ICE efforts targeting undocumented immigrants includes figures such as Judge Milwaukee, who is alleged to have assisted immigrants in avoiding arrest, and Nashville’s Democratic mayor, Freddie O’Connell, who recently disclosed the identity of an ICE agent involved in local enforcement efforts.
