Governor of Alaska Initiates Inquiry into Democrat Mary Peltola's Senate Campaign

Investigation Ordered into Mary Peltola’s Senate Campaign

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has initiated an investigation into Democrat Mary Peltola’s Senate campaign, following allegations of a scheme designed to mislead voters ahead of the upcoming election. According to reports, including one from the Washington Post, Dunleavy has instructed the Alaska Department of Public Safety to look into whether this scheme breached Alaska’s laws.

Dunleavy shared his concerns on X, commenting on a New York Times article that presented troubling evidence of a coordinated effort to manipulate elections in Alaska. This alleged strategy involved recruiting candidates, including one with the same name as the incumbent U.S. Senator, to confuse voters and mislead their choices. He remarked that the Alaska Division of Elections had previously investigated these issues back in June, and the latest reports seem to bolster their findings. Consequently, he has called for the Department of Public Safety to determine if legal violations occurred and if any criminal or civil actions should be pursued.

The triggering report detailed tactics used by the Democrats to find a candidate named Dan Sullivan, the same name as Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. It included interviews, text messages, and documents supposedly indicating Peltola’s team was involved with efforts to encourage Mr. Sullivan to run. This endeavor was internally branded as the “ballot composition project,” which engaged Peltola’s campaign lawyers and senior aides from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, according to Breitbart News.

Much of the information highlighted in the New York Times was provided by Elisa Rios, who had previously served as Peltola’s campaign manager. Rios expressed in interviews that Alaskans need to be heavily informed about how the ballot came to include an independent candidate named Dan Sullivan. She did mention, however, that while Peltola wasn’t directly part of this initiative, she was certainly aware of it.

Alaska employs a ranked-choice voting system that prompts voters to rank their preferences in elections on the ballot. Minor shifts in voter preferences can significantly influence the outcome. Next week, the ballot will feature Senator Sullivan, Peltola, the liberal candidate also named Sullivan, and Gerald Heikes.

The liberal Sullivan previously stated he voted for the Democratic candidate in the last three presidential elections and supported Peltola in her recent congressional bids, even contributing to her campaign and other Democrats.

Dunleavy emphasized the seriousness of the situation, declaring that intentionally misleading voters undermines electoral integrity and insisting that any violators must face consequences.
