Governor Withdraws From Senate Contest, Leaving Only The Democrat With Debatable Tattoos

Maine Governor Janet Mills Exits Senate Race

Maine’s Democratic Governor, Janet Mills, has stepped back from the Senate race, leaving Graham Platner as the lone prominent candidate, though his tattoos are raising eyebrows.

On Thursday, Mills made her withdrawal announcement and reflected on her years in office, including her time as district attorney and attorney general. Platner, who is now the only notable Democratic contender, has faced criticism for a tattoo on his chest that resembles the Totenkopf, a skull symbol often linked to the Nazi SS.

My statement discontinuing my candidacy for U.S. Senate:

In her announcement, Mills highlighted her contributions to Maine, mentioning her advocacy for “reproductive freedom” and efforts to improve “health care,” while stating that the state is now better prepared for severe weather and pollution, which she attributes to climate change.

At 78, Mills explained her decision to withdraw by recalling her initial motivations. She felt compelled to act because of the struggles Maine residents faced, citing turmoil in Washington and concerns over democracy. “I still believe that,” she added. However, she acknowledged that finances played a significant role in her choice to exit the race.

“I have the dedication and experience to keep going, but unfortunately, I lack what campaigns require these days: financial resources. That’s why I’m discontinuing my campaign for the United States Senate,” she said, emphasizing her passion for service.

My name is Graham Platner. I’m running for the United States Senate to defeat Susan Collins and bring down the oligarchy that is destroying our country. I’m a veteran, an oysterman, and a working-class Mainer who has seen this state become less livable for working people. And it deeply angers me.

Mills concluded her statement by expressing hope for the future and admiration for the people of Maine, indicating her intention to continue her work as governor over the remaining months of her term.

Platner, the progressive candidate, had been gaining traction in the race against Republican Senator Susan Collins. Recent polls showed Platner commanding a substantial lead over Mills, raising questions about her viability as a candidate. While former Maine official David Costello remains in the race, he is not a significant factor.

Following Mills’ announcement, comments from Democratic leaders implied respect for her choice to continue serving as governor. They recognized her as a formidable leader unafraid to confront challenges head-on.

Mills had initially entered the race in late 2025 but faced scrutiny over Platner’s resurfaced controversial online comments. These included derogatory remarks about various groups, which could undermine his appeal to voters. His past statements on social media have sparked significant backlash and raised concerns among potential supporters.

The political landscape in Maine remains charged, especially with Platner’s remarks attracting negative attention that might influence campaign dynamics moving forward.

The Daily Caller attempted to reach out to both Collins and Platner for comments but did not receive responses before publication.
