Celebration of Dropping Out: A New Perspective
“Forget about school,” declared Haz Hubble, a dropout turned tech entrepreneur, during a unique graduation ceremony dedicated to fellow dropouts. He emphasized that “if you’re smart and driven, traditional education isn’t necessary.”
The event, known as “Dropout Graduation,” might seem like a joke at first, but the attendees, packed into San Francisco’s Marina Theatre, embraced it as a bold statement against conventional paths, academic pressures, and societal expectations.
While many attendees wore casual outfits—button-ups, dresses, and some even donned caps and gowns—what united them was a shared belief that university might not be for everyone.
Gen Z is often labeled the “Ghosted Generation,” and both universities and employers appear to be drawing tougher lines. This skepticism isn’t unfounded; tech giants like Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Mark Zuckerberg, among others, have paved their own paths without completing college.
Cory Levy, founder of the Z-Fellows Program aimed at nurturing young entrepreneurs, noted, “As kids, we naturally question tradition and authority, but when it comes to college, that questioning seems to fade away. This gathering is a testament to those exceptions.”
Many dropouts express their unease with the conventional educational route. In tech hubs like San Francisco, opportunities abound for those without degrees, while traditional graduates often find the job market unwelcoming.
As Ken Rusk, author of “Blue Collar Cash,” pointed out in a recent interview, the conventional college narrative is deeply ingrained in our education systems. Students pursuing trades often face anxiety and doubt when surrounded by a culture that prioritizes degree completion.
Ali Debou, a co-organizer of the Dropout Graduation, shared his struggles with feeling isolated when breaking free from the college mold expected by his family. Yet, he believes the core message of their event transcends the divide between college and non-college paths. It’s fundamentally about embracing one’s autonomy and having the confidence to carve out a personal route to success.
