Graham Linehan, the mind behind “Father Ted,” shared a perplexing audio clip from his detention at Heathrow Airport after being taken into custody for several social media posts considered “anti-trans.” Linehan’s frustration was evident after flying in from Arizona on American Airlines, where he was confronted by five British police officers on Monday, as reported.
It was noted that on April 19, 2025, he made a particular post that allegedly aimed to instigate hatred and incite violence regarding sexual orientation.
“What was the post?” Linehan, 57, asked, according to the audio.
“I can’t disclose that at this moment,” the police officer replied.
“Are you serious? I’m a comedy writer! I created ‘Father Ted!'” Linehan exclaimed.
Another officer reiterated, “You’re being arrested.”
Linehan’s disbelief was apparent, “Holy moly! I can’t believe I’m arrested. Do you know how this looks to America?”
The audio gets muddled as he and officers continue their exchange.
“I’m going to take legal action against you,” he declared, repeating it several times.
Despite the police’s attempts to de-escalate the situation, Linehan remained agitated.
“I’m not upset—I’m calm! How dare you!” he shouted. “I’ve faced harassment from trans activists for years, and you’re siding with them. This is infuriating.”
Following his arrest, Linehan was transported to a hospital due to high blood pressure, triggered by stress.
The audio surfaced in the wake of his contentious arrest relating to his allegedly unlawful posts on social media.
One post from April 19 featured a picture from a trans rights rally, with the caption “Photos you can smell.” In a different post that day, he expressed strong negative sentiments about trans individuals, stating, “I hate them. They’re vicious and homophobic. Screw them.”
The day after, he wrote, “If a man identifies as a woman and enters a woman-only space, he is behaving violently and abusively. Make a scene, contact the police, and if all else fails, do what’s necessary.”
After his detention, Linehan remarked, “I was taken in at an airport that appeared like a terrorist situation, held in what felt like a prison, and rushed to the hospital because I was nearly overwhelmed by stress while being banned from expressing myself online.”
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man in his 50s was arrested at Heathrow for inciting violence.
