New Challenger Emerges for Senator Susan Collins

With over a year until the election, U.S. Senator Susan Collins from Maine is facing a new contender. Graham Platter, a Democrat, officially entered the race early Tuesday morning. His background includes service as a combat veteran in both the U.S. Army and Marines during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Currently, he runs the Waukeag Neck Oyster Co.

On his campaign Facebook page, he describes himself as “an enemy of the working-main friend, Oligarchy.” Interestingly, he has scheduled more than 12 town halls across New England. He expressed concerns about the damage caused by incredibly wealthy individuals and corrupt politicians, stating that “the fabric that holds us together feels ripped apart.”

Senate Democrats are keenly interested in attracting top candidates to help reclaim their majority in the upcoming 2026 midterms. Platner’s platform includes advocating for Universal Healthcare, supporting veterans, and stopping funding for foreign wars. Notably, his campaign video was created by Morris Katz, who is a key advisor to Zoran Mamdani, another Democratic candidate, this time for New York City Mayor.

However, Jason Savage, the executive director of Maine Republicans, shared doubts about Platter’s appeal: “Being a donor for Bernie Bro and Kamala Harris won’t resonate much with Maine’s rural and conservative voters,” he noted. All this speculation might seem particularly interesting given the current political climate.

Platner, who is new to the political scene, mentioned his alignment with Senator John Fetterman, a Democratic figure from Pennsylvania. He humorously remarked on how people label him as a liberal, pointing out that he is an avid competitive pistol shooter and firearms instructor—activities he enjoys on weekends. Born and raised in the countryside of Maine, he feels that firearms are simply part of life there.

The pool of Democratic challengers to Collins continues to expand. There’s talk that the state’s 77-year-old Democratic governor, Janet Mills, might also consider joining the race. Presently, Republicans hold a narrow lead in the Senate, with 53 seats compared to 47 for Democrats, who would need to flip four to regain a majority in the midterm elections.

In response to the growing competition, a spokesperson for Collins described Platner as simply “another progressive participating in the race.”
