Sen. Lindsey Graham (RS.C.) praised fellow Palmetto State Sen. Tim Scott, saying he would be a great running mate for President Trump in November because of their “chemistry.” .
“There’s some chemistry there. I was close to both of them,” Graham said Saturday. Interview with Fox News. “He likes him. Tim is really leaning into helping President Trump become president.”
Scott suspended his bid for the White House in November, but formally endorsed Trump last month and has since become a key figure in the campaign supporting former President Trump. Many of Haley’s supporters questioned the decision, as Trump’s only remaining rival was the one who put the senator in his current job.
Graham insisted on Saturday that Scott was the right choice because he was “ready to be president” and said that was “the most important thing” for the vice president.
This week, at a town hall event in Greenville, South Carolina, President Trump confirmed his short list of running mates.
The list includes Scott, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), Congressman Byron Donald (R-Fla.), South Dakota Governor Kristi Neom (R-Fla.), They included former Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. He served in Congress as a Democrat, but later became more conservative.
Trump said all of the candidates were “solid.”
“I hope he chooses him. President Trump, I know he has a lot of good options, but he couldn’t do better than Tim Scott,” Graham told Fox News. told. “Even from a conservative standpoint, he’s solid in every respect.”
“I think he will help grow the party and he is a really good person,” he continued. “So this country would be better off if Tim Scott were vice president.”
After endorsing Trump, Scott suggested he would be willing to serve next to him.
The former president lavished praise on the South Carolina senator on Friday, saying the senator was “a much better representative to me than he was.”
“He’s the greatest surrogate mother I’ve ever seen,” Trump said at a rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
“This man comes from a modest, high-quality man, introducing his mother, who, by the way, is a wonderful person. … He is a much better representative to me than he is a representative of himself.” Trump continued. “And that’s true. That’s a great compliment. And you know why? Because he’s a man of class. He doesn’t like to talk about himself.”
His comments came just a day before voters in the Palmetto State headed to the polls in South Carolina’s Republican primary.
Graham said he planned to meet with both Trump and Scott on Saturday night, as former President Trump and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley face off in the state’s primary.
Trump currently leads Haley by 30 points (63.8% to 33.1%) in South Carolina, according to The Hill/Decision Desk Headquarters polling index.
