Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina avoided questions about former President Trump’s false claims during a debate last week.
CNN’s Dana Bash pressed Graham on why he didn’t “stand back” after Trump made multiple false claims during the debate. Graham then turned to CNN’s “State of the Union” to emphasize that Trump had put in a very strong performance, while President Biden had not.
“Well, I thought he had a very good night, and I think a lot of people who watched the debate thought the same,” he told Bash. “At the end of the day, he was strong, he was clear, he was coherent. But the idea that Biden had a bad night is just not true. He had a terrible presidency and a terrible debate.”
“How did it get to this? Why weren’t the American people warned beforehand when they saw what they saw? We have a compliant media that is ignoring President Biden’s problems. They are trying to sugar coat this as a right-wing attack that he has compromised. There is nothing totally fake here,” he added.
He then pointed to a recent op-ed. The New York Times and Atlanta Journal-Constitution They called on Biden to drop out of the race.
“Trump is compromising and the media is reporting it. The Trump administration’s policies are destroying the country. The New York Times and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution are bashing Trump, yet they think he’s a good president,” he said. “Trump is not a good president. He’s a decent person. He’s a failed president. He’s compromising. That’s the story of this.”
Furthermore, when asked if he was convinced by Trump’s statement that he would only accept the election results if they were a “fair, legitimate and good election,” Graham asserted that he was.
