Grand Forks man sentenced 30 years imprisonment Charge of kidnapping a woman and attempting to sexually assault her. He was sentenced Friday.
grand forks herald report A jury found Jarrod Jashawn Adams, 29, guilty of Class A felony kidnapping, Class A attempted sexual imposition, Class C felony terrorism, Class C felony interfering with a 911 call, and Class B misdemeanor simple assault. .
An affidavit in the case states that Adams appears to have followed the victim into a Grand Forks apartment on May 1, 2022. The woman was alarmed, so she reportedly texted her then-boyfriend. This message was shown to the jury during the trial.
However, her boyfriend was unable to enter the secure building.
Court statements from both the state and the judge revealed that security camera footage from the area showed Adams covering the area so no one could see.
Adams then followed the woman to a fourth-floor apartment. He apparently blocked her when she tried to go to the elevator. Video footage of part of the fight was played in court.
Judge Jason McCarthy said the victim’s “reaction to the video was visceral”, adding that she was “clearly frightened and it was frightening to watch”.
Adams reportedly reached into his waistband and possibly mentioned a weapon. He instructed the victim not to scream. He then allegedly grabbed the victim by the neck and reached for her cell phone.
The woman managed to escape and ran down the hallway. She reportedly entered the empty apartment, where Adams chased her and grabbed her as she screamed for help. She attempted her escape, but Adams “forced her back” into her unit.
In an attempt to escape, the victim punched Adams in the groin and scratched his neck and face. When she fought him off, Adams fled the building. However, he was soon found by law enforcement and arrested the same day.
Ashley Neufeld, who represented the state in the case, said Adams “stole (the victim’s) safety, her sense of security that day.”
“His plan that day was to rape her,” she added. “He did kidnap her that day.”
Neufeld also noted Adams’ previous criminal history, which spans multiple states. However, he had no history of sex crimes or kidnapping, according to the Grand Forks Herald.
Adams was found guilty and subsequently sentenced. The report notes that Adams would need to serve 25 and a half years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.
While incarcerated, Adams must complete a sex offender evaluation and implement its recommendations. When he is eventually released, he will be on supervised probation for five years and will be required to register as a sex offender for at least 15 years.
