Grand jury issues subpoenas to Brennan, Strzok, and Page in Trump-Russia investigation

Federal Grand Jury Subpoenas High-Profile Officials in Trump-Russia Probe

A federal grand jury has issued subpoenas to several prominent figures, including former CIA Director John Brennan and ex-FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, as part of an investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia inquiry. This information comes from sources close to the investigation.

Reportedly, the subpoenas were delivered on Friday, targeting Brennan, Strzok—who was the FBI’s Deputy Director for Counterintelligence—and Page, a former FBI attorney. Law enforcement has indicated that up to 30 subpoenas could be distributed in the next few days.

This grand jury operates outside the Southern District of Florida, and U.S. Attorney Jason Redding Quiñones is overseeing the investigation. Earlier in July, it was already reported that both Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey were under scrutiny.

Comey, meanwhile, has faced charges of making false statements and obstructing Congress, for which he has pleaded not guilty. His trial is expected to commence in January. In 2018, Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz revealed a series of anti-Trump text exchanges between Strzok and Page. The two had been part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team starting in 2017.

Page worked briefly with Mueller’s team before returning to the FBI’s Office of General Counsel in July 2017. Strzok, however, was removed from the special counsel’s team and moved to the FBI’s human resources department. Strzok was known for initiating the FBI’s original Russia investigation, codenamed “Crossfire Hurricane,” in July 2016.

Both individuals faced significant fallout from their involvement in the investigation—Page resigned in May 2018, while Strzok was fired in August 2018 following extensive scrutiny about his texts. Interestingly, Strzok also acknowledged having an affair with Page during the Congressional hearings in 2018.

This story is still developing, and more updates will be provided as they become available.
