A grandma packing heat has captured the internet’s heart.
A video of a grandmother brandishing a firearm while confronting a suspected shoplifter in a Tucson neighborhood has gone viral. People online have dubbed her “sneaky grandma” and “evil grandma,” enthusiastically backing her apparent effort to thwart the theft.
The unusual scene unfolded outside a Ross Dress for Less on Tucson’s East Side earlier this month. The alleged shoplifter was seen leaving with a large collection of items—multiple suitcases and backpacks—giving off more of an airport vibe than that of a typical thief making a quick getaway.
As the suspect ambled across the parking lot, he was met by the armed woman who pointed what looked like a handgun in his direction. “We need more brave people like this!” shouted one onlooker.
Another person cheered, “Get Grandma!!!”
Oddly enough, despite the ruckus from a store alarm and a gun pointed at him, the suspect leisurely chatted with the woman before they went their separate ways. The clip took off on social media, quickly gaining traction.
“People have had enough. Don’t tempt us older folks over 50. Cheer up!” one commenter remarked.
Meanwhile, Tucson police are treating the incident as a shoplifting case and are reviewing social media footage for leads. Officers arrived at the scene but could not find the suspect, and no arrests have been made.
Interestingly, while many are applauding the grandmother’s actions, legal experts advise caution. Tucson criminal defense attorney Luis Fidel explained that while there are instances where displaying a firearm can be justified to deter certain crimes, shoplifting isn’t typically included in those scenarios. He warned that pointing a gun could lead to aggravated assault charges.
Yet, the online community has already come to a conclusion about the grandmother’s actions. Many have humorously suggested that “Ross Dress for Less needs to put her on their payroll immediately.”
